Civil Disobedience 101
Take it to the White House
In just over three years of action, students throughout the country have mobilized to pass substantive legislation through Congress, pressure elected officials using DarfurScores and 1-800 GENOCIDE, and have organized successful lobbying days at Capitol Hill. Despite these victories, genocide still ravages in Darfur. And there is much more our government can do to end the atrocities.
Students throughout the country are currently engaging in Sudan: The Executive Legacy Campaign. We are asking President Bush to Stick to his promises, Enforce UNAMID, Apply an All-Sudan Solution, and Lobby China. And to make sure these asks get attention, we will be engaging in an act of civil disobedience on Sunday, April 13th by protesting directly in front of the White House.
Civil disobedience, a practice used throughout American history, and specifically in the Civil Rights movement, consists of announcing a public defiance of specific laws or policies in order to bring attention to the flawed practices.
STAND has determined that the Bush Administration can take further action to end the genocide in Darfur. After more than five years of genocide, the time for that action is long overdue. Through our act of civil disobedience, we will demonstrate that the time for President Bush to take action is now.
Please join us on April 13, as STAND takes our asks to the gates of the White House. We will participate in civil disobedience directly after Amnesty’s Global Days for Darfur rally.
