Communications Coordinator

STAND, the student-led division of Genocide Intervention Network, is a network of high school and college chapters and thousands of student activists across the nation committed to the prevention and end of genocide and mass atrocities globally. STAND formed out of the rapidly growing student movement to protect the people of Darfur, Sudan and now works to unify a growing student anti-genocide movement by providing activists with resources to educate and organize in their community, empowering them through an extensive network of impassioned student leaders and advocating for a change in our government’s mentality towards genocide.

The following job description offers a brief overview of a particular position on the STAND Managing Committee (MC), followed by four categories:

1. Management Duties:
These are the essential tasks that each Coordinator will be responsible for completing.
2. Coordination Duties:
Communication and teamwork are key to an effective Managing Committee; therefore, this section outlines the ways in which each Coordinator will work with other members of the Managing Committee (MC).
3. Accountability Obligations:
Coordinators will be held accountable for their duties through the relationships and measures described in this section.
4. Required Skills:
This section outlines the abilities and experience necessary for each position.

STAND Communications Coordinator

The Communications Coordinator works to get STAND's message out to local and national audiences. The Communications Coordinator is responsible for managing the Communications Team, which garners media attention for STAND on all levels, from national campaigns to local school events.

Management Duties:

  • Be an active leader in and build their own chapter and use it to raise awareness, raise funds for genocide prevention and advocate policy solutions to Members of Congress
  • Craft and advise on strong, clear, and consistent messaging for STAND efforts
  • Develop national communications strategies for promoting STAND activities, including a Messaging Calendar
  • Oversee earned media clip collection and aggregation
  • Handle all lower-scale press interviews and pass off interviews to Student Director when necessary in coordination with GI-NET Communications Director
  • Manage and oversee the efforts, training and professional development of the STAND Communications Team, which consists of a Social Media Specialist, a Video Specialist and a Webmaster. The Communications Team will:
    • Ensure, to the greatest extent possible, that all participants in STAND campaigns and initiatives, from the MC to individual schools, promote and adhere to the established message
    • Write and edit content for STAND's newsletters and Action Alerts
    • Manage, devise, and execute social networking strategic messaging and implementation
    • Manage STAND's facebook, myspace and twitter accounts
    • Manage the STAND National Blog
    • Edit all materials and web content available to the STAND network
    • Develop internal and external Messaging Guides
    • Develop exciting multimedia content to better engage individuals and chapters
    • Continue to establish STAND in various social media networks and develop ways to utilize that media most effectively
    • Work with individual STAND chapters to help them garner media attention
    • Track all media by or about STAND students
    • Track media by or about other student anti-genocide activists

Coordination Duties:

  • Maintains regular, individual communication with other STAND MC members and Staff
  • Coordinates and leads weekly conference calls  and individual check-ins with the Communications Team
  • Work closely with Advocacy Coordinator to promote advocacy updates and asks
  • Work closely with Outreach Coordinators to shape local and national messaging and to amplify chapters' efforts
  • Work with Education Coordinator to ensure that news updates and general education is communicated clearly and on message
  • Provide input on the shaping of all STAND events and campaigns so that there is a strong media appeal
  • Manage STAND's website and ensure all content is up-to-date, on message and easily navigable

Accountability Obligations:

  • Manage and report results of clip tracking to MC and STAND Staff
  • Support Outreach Coordinators to meet goals for media coverage for STAND events and programs
  • Work with STAND Student Director and Staff to create and follow a messaging calendar
  • Communicate efforts, successes, and challenges directly to STAND via monthly metrics in order to inform STAND's programs and available resources
  • Set a year-long fundraising goal and work to achieve it using STAND's resources and materials
  • Actively participate in weekly MC conference calls
  • Check-in weekly with STAND Student Director and Staff
  • Communicates weekly with GI-NET Communications Director

Required Skills:

  • Strong communications skills
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Experience with social media and blogging
  • Ability to effectively manage, delegate and hold people accountable
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience with journalism, media outreach and/or "communications" preferred, but not required
