Student Director
STAND, the student-led division of Genocide Intervention Network, is a network of high school and college chapters and thousands of student activists across the nation committed to the prevention and end of genocide and mass atrocities globally. STAND formed out of the rapidly growing student movement to protect the people of Darfur, Sudan and now works to unify a growing student anti-genocide movement by providing activists with resources to educate and organize in their community, empowering them through an extensive network of impassioned student leaders and advocating for a change in our government’s mentality towards genocide.
The following job description offers a brief overview of a particular position on the STAND Managing Committee (MC), followed by four categories:
- Management Duties: These are the essential tasks that each Coordinator will be responsible for completing.
- Coordination Duties: Communication and teamwork are key to an effective Managing Committee; therefore, this section outlines the ways in which each Coordinator will work with other members of the Managing Committee (MC).
- Accountability Obligations: Coordinators will be held accountable for their duties through the relationships and measures described in this section.

STAND Student Director
The Student Director coordinates STAND's national events, serves as the face of the student movement, and works to ensure the organization works strategically and effectively to fulfill its mission and vision. This position is fulfilled through overseeing the Managing Committee in collaboration with STAND staff, public speaking engagements, op-ed writing, and helping to develop overall strategies for STAND. This position comes with a required paid fellowship in Washington, DC with the Genocide Intervention Network for a minimum of 4 weeks over the summer.
Management Duties:
- Be an active leader in and build their own chapter and use it to raise awareness, raise funds for genocide prevention and advocate policy solutions to Members of Congress
- Maintains consistent (at least weekly, often daily) contact with all STAND MC members to help provide general oversight, guidance, and direction in coordination with STAND Staff
- Develops and oversees the planning and execution of all STAND national events and initiatives to ensure that they reflect students’ needs, interests, and goals in collaboration with MC members
- Moderate and lead weekly conference calls and retreats with the STAND MC with STAND Staff
- Represents STAND as the "public face" through public speaking engagements, newsletters, op-eds, meetings with other organizations, etc.
- Oversee and lead selection and transition of STAND MC members
Coordination Duties:
- Participates in strategic planning discussions to represent student views in the planning of organizational priorities and programs
- Coordinates the STAND MC through regular contact with necessary coordinators, STAND Staff, weekly conference calls, and retreats
- Maintains daily contact with STAND staff to collaborate on the management of the STAND MC and the overall direction of the anti-genocide movement
Accountability Obligations:
- Works to develop semester, yearly, and long-term goals for STAND in coordination with STAND Staff
- Leads the MC in the process of developing programmatic (campaign/initiative) priorities
- Maintains consistent contact with and regularly solicits advice and guidance from GI-NET staff
- Work with STAND Staff to ensure MC members are held accountable
- Communicate efforts, successes, and challenges directly to STAND via monthly metrics in order to inform STAND's programs and available resources
- Set a year-long fundraising goal and work to achieve it using STAND's resources and materials
- Coordinate with STAND Staff to develop the agenda for weekly MC conference calls and lead the call in a manner that creates an open but purposeful forum for coordinators to update each other, express ideas and opinions and solicit constructive feedback

- Strong leadership skills, especially the ability to motivate and create accountability
