What is STAND: A Student Anti-Genocide Coalition?
STAND: A Student Anti-Genocide Coalition is an umbrella organization of over 600 high school and college chapters dedicated to putting an end to genocide, specifically the ongoing genocide in Darfur, Sudan. STAND provides resources, campaigns, and a strong, unified network that empowers students to take action to stop genocide whenever and wherever it may occur. STAND is the student division of the Genocide Intervention Network (or GI-Net).
What does STAND do?
STAND students don't just mourn genocide - they actively mobilize to stop it!
In the past year, STAND chapters around the country have lobbied their representatives in Congress through letters and direct lobbying on Capitol Hill, generated more than 2,000 phone calls to the White House, organized rallies around the country, and raised more than $130,000 for civilian protection in Darfur. In conjunction with the Sudan Divestment Task Force, STAND chapters have also led divestment campaigns at their universities and in their cities and states. On campus and in their communities, STAND students are at the forefront of the Darfur movement, raising awareness, raising funds, and advocating for real legislative action. Join us to make STAND even more effective this semester!
What happened to Students Taking Action Now: Darfur?
STAND was formerly known as Students Taking Action Now: Darfur. While the current focus is on the ongoing genocide in Darfur, STAND recognized a need to establish an anti-genocide coalition of students that will be around for years to come. We hope to educate students about past genocides as well as prevent future ones. A vigilant constituency and organization is needed to take on this task. Thus, the name change from the acronym S.T.A.N.D. to STAND: A Student Anti-Genocide Coalition.
Where do donations go?
to STAND and GI-Net go towards a civilian protection program. Without civilian protection, the humanitarian aid that currently exists cannot reach the people of Darfur. Specifically, the donations will go towards increased and strengthened firewood patrols that protect Darfurians in Internally Displaced Persons camps in North Darfur. By supporting civilian protection in Darfur, you are helping to alleviate suffering and working towards the end goal of allowing civilians to return to their homes safely. Less than 15% of all donations will be spent on administrative costs for the organization. Click here for more information on GI-Net's civilian protection program in Darfur.
Who leads STAND?
STAND is a student-led organization. Two full-time employees in STAND's national headquarters in Washington, DC give support to thirteen full-time college student volunteers that make up STAND's Managing Committee. These students are from all over the country and help to guide the organization in all aspects of progamming, support, and planning. Find out more about the STAND Managing Committee on the Staff page. Any student can apply to be a part of this committee. To find out more information on how you can apply, check out the STAND Employment page.
How do I start a STAND chapter at my school?
Starting a STAND chapter is one of the most powerful things you can do to fight genocide. Raising awareness and creating a team of anti-genocide activists is an action that makes a huge difference. Fill out the "Start a New Chapter" form to get information from one of STAND's Regional Outreach Coordinators who can walk you through the process of starting a chapter, give you advice on events and actions, and also tie you into the STAND network.
