Originally from Boca Raton, FL, Layla is a senior at Harvard University where she studies Government and Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. She started her human rights work by researching for the Harvard University Committee on Human Rights Studies, and began her anti-genocide activism by interning at the Genocide Intervention Network two summers ago. She has served as STAND's Regional Conference Conference Coordinator (2007-2008) and Programming Coordinator (2008-200). Layla feels honored to work on behalf of this incredible network of united, dedicated, and inspiring students. Outside of STAND Layla loves to hip hop dance and choreograph. Back to top

Advocacy Coordinator

Nina McMurry

Originally from the Seattle area, Nina has been involved in anti-genocide activism since her freshman year of college, when she started working on university and state divestment campaigns with the Sudan Divestment Task Force. After her sophomore year, she left school for a year to work full-time as a research analyst for SDTF at the Genocide Intervention Network. She is a rising senior at Stanford University majoring in Political Science, and is addicted to Diet Coke and NPR. Back to top

Sean has served as STAND's Communications Coordinator since April of 2007.  His main job is to get STAND's message and vision of a world without genocide out to the public, through communicating with chapters via newsletters and action alerts, and through getting media attention for STAND nationally and locally. Sean is in his fourth year at George Washington University in Washington, DC, where he studies public policy. He hails from the Chicagoland area where he spends his summers lifeguarding and teaching swim lessons. Back to top

Anna Siegel

Anna is originally from Columbia, MD. Currently, she is a senior at the University of Pittsburgh where she is majoring in Anthropology and Politics/Philosophy and pursuing a minor in French. She first became involved with anti-genocide advocacy in high school, and she has served as the Treasurer and Vice President of her STAND chapter at Pitt. In the summer of 2007, she interned for GI-Net's Sudan Divestment Task Force. When she is not tending to STAND matters, Anna can be found pedalling through Pittsburgh on her adored sea-foam green bike or setting off her fire alarm with her culinary innovations. Back to top

Robert Cimmino

Robbie was born in California, but has lived in Texas for the past 11 years and is now a junior at Texas A&M University studying Civil Engineering. His history with STAND is short, but he is excited about all of the amazing people involved with the organization. Depending on whom you ask Robbie drinks 2-5 cokes a day, a statistic of which he is quite proud. He also has an obsession with Michael Jordan, large wall clocks and other people’s iPhones. Katie became involved with STAND her junior year in high school after she attended the first national conference at Harvard University in December 2005. She helped to co-found her high school's STAND chapter. Since coming to Swarthmore College she has been active in her chapter. She is proud to be the National Outreach Coordinator for STAND and is committed to bringing the voice of the grassroots loud and clear into the anti-genocide movement. Katie is a Sociology and Anthropology major and plans to continue to use cultural understanding in human rights advocacy. Back to top

Mickey Jackson

Mickey has been involved with STAND at a chapter level since his freshman year of high school, and joined the SLT (Student Leadership Team) at the beginning of his senior year as the Southwest hiROC. He is now an incoming freshman at the Catholic University of America in DC, and looks forward to working with lots of awesome activists as the hiNOC! He is also a caffeine addict (due largely to his involvement with STAND) and enjoys watching 'Law and Order' in his spare time! Back to top

Sabina Carlson

Sabina has been working on issues concerning Sudan since age 12, and intends on spending the rest of her life helping communities recover from conflict through agriculture and nutrition work, and helping to prevent conflict through initiatives like STAND. She has spent time working with students from across the States and communities in Haiti and Southern Sudan. She is a dual-degree student at Tufts University getting her bachelor's in Peace and Justice Studies and Community Health and a Masters in Public Health, and a proud Jersey girl. Back to top

Saige Martin

Saige grew up in Bucks County, Pennsylvania for the majority of his life, but soon realized there was a bigger world out there and decided that he will be attending Hawai'i Pacific University starting in the fall of 2009 where he will be double majoring in International Relations and Political Science. He became involved with STAND after starting a chapter at his high school with his two best friends. Saige has served on the International Task Force and is thrilled to have the opportunity to be the IOC. Fun Fact: Saige auditioned for American Idol when he was 16. Back to top

Matthew Heck

Matthew, a native of Wichita, KS, is a freshman at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania where he remains (and plans to continue to remain so for some time) undecided about his major. Matthew helped with the Kansas divestment campaign in 2006 and 2007 and then raised $25,000 in 2008 for the Civilian Protection Program through the Never Ignore, Never Forget relay. In 2010, he plans to run across the entire country to raise more money. Matthew loves Espresso Truffles from Starbucks almost as if they were a member of his own family. Back to top

Affectionately dubbed the "Design Monkey", Curt is a junior at Western Michigan University majoring in Fine Arts with a focus on Graphic Design. Curt believes that design is one of the most important factors in disseminating information. By making STAND's materials visually stimulating, Curt feels that the message that they contain will reach a larger audience, and thus be more effective in fighting genocide world wide. Back to top

Daniel Solomon

Daniel grew up in New York City and is now a freshman at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, in Washington, DC, where he is majoring in International Politics with certificates in International Development and German. Daniel first became involved with STAND when he was appointed National Burma Education Coordinator in June 2009. If Daniel could be anywhere else in the world he would be in Vermont, serving as a professional cheese taster. An interesting fact about Daniel is that he has played piano for eight years. Emily Cunningham is a first year economics major at Harvard University. She first became involved with STAND when she founded her high school's chapter two years ago, and she served on the STAND Leadership Team as an Outreach Coordinator last year. In her free time, she plays saxophone in a ska band and Ultimate Frisbee. She hopes to pursue a career in microfinance in the developing world. Back to top

Jenna grew up in Las Vegas and is now in her 3rd year at University of Nevada, Reno where she is majoring in International Affairs and minoring in Community Health Sciences. She helped to start a STAND chapter at her school in 2007 upon hearing about the genocide in Darfur, but it was only after meeting all of the the incredible individuals at her first National Student Conference that she knew she would forever be a member of the anti-genocide movement. She's generally pretty busy with STAND and school, but when she gets a free weekend, she likes to brave Donner Pass and make the trek to San Francisco. Back to top

Jackie Lewis

Jackie grew up in New Hampshire and is now a senior at the University of New Hampshire in the small seacoast town of Durham. She is majoring in Political Science and minoring in Philosophy and Religious Studies. After attending a Darfur rally, she was inspired to join other students at UNH in founding a STAND chapter in the fall of 2007. Jackie interned with the policy team at the ENOUGH Project in the summer of 2008, and spent this past summer conducting research in Butare, Rwanda on transitional justice and ethnic identity. Jackie can frequently be spotted throughout the UNH campus carrying her yoga mat and tea mug.  Back to top
