It doesn’t take much to change the world.

Any other day, I might have difficulty believing such a statement.  But not today.

I have witnessed the phenomenal ability of our movement to grow and reach out to others: STAND has more than 700 chapters across the nation; over 700 students converged on D.C. for our third National Student Conference; and, in three years of Darfur Fasts, we have raised $500,000 for Civilian Protection.

But now, the stakes are higher than ever.

I often see the same Margaret Mead quotation used over and over in STAND: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” While perhaps overused, it is an extremely appropriate sentiment for what STAND is. We describe STAND as the Student Anti-Genocide Coalition. As individual students, we have an incredible ability to bring about change, advocate for policy, educate our friends and raise money for the survivors of mass atrocities.

It's fundraising time, and not just for STAND. With the holidays getting closer and closer, many organizations are asking for money.  Student groups are raising money for all kinds of issues - from toys for low-income children to international humanitarian aid.

At a time like this, STAND activists can't help but ask: why civilian protection?

We now have more info on the Transition Rally, which will kick off STAND Out Loud: The 2008 National Student Conference on Friday, November 7th.

Get all the info you need here.

This is our chance to capitalize on the excitement of the election. We have to remind the country that the new President-Elect must turn promise into policy on Darfur.  Don't miss it.

Working for peace on another continent may at times feel far away – but at times we are reminded how close to home this conflict really is.

The Sudan Hope Concert is one of those times that reminds us of that. Tomorrow, Saturday, November 1, young Sudanese musicians, performing artists, and poets living in the United States are coming together to perform with the hope of broadcasting their support for the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and their concern for the humanitarian crisis in Darfur.

Registration may be closed for STAND Out Loud, the National Student Conference 2008, but that doesn't mean you're left out.

Keep an eye out for more info on Chapter Retreats occurring in states around the country early in the Spring semester, and get in touch with your Outreach Coordinator on other ways to learn the activist tools we're going over at the National Conference.

Last week, STAND chapters around the country wrote letters to Gwen Ifill, urging her to ask about Darfur at last week's VP debate in her capacity as moderator. And she did. Still not convinced it had to do with activists like yourselves?

Look at this Sudan Tribune article:

At the end of the article, it says, "Activist organizations had been lobbying intensely for the debate moderator to ask a question about Darfur, mostly through e-mail and letter-writing campaigns."
