25 Years and Counting
Who: STAND students across the country.
What: The 25th anniversary of the U.S. ratification of the Genocide Convention
Why: To put the spotlight on genocide and mass atrocities prevention.
When: Spring 2011
This week marks the 25th anniversary of the U.S.Senate ratification of the Genocide Convention. STAND invites you to join us in putting the spotlight on genocide and mass atrocities prevention. We will begin the 25 Years and Counting initiative by recognizing the ratification’s 25th anniversary on Saturday, February 19.
Over the course of the next few months, we will pressure Congress and the Obama administration through a variety of coordinated online actions, including the strategic use of social media, as well as offline advocacy opportunities, including lobby sessions with members of Congress, call-in campaigns, and local advocacy events.
We will continue to pressure Congress to continue to fund critical crisis response and prevention programs, humanitarian aid initiatives, and support for migration and refugee programs. We will urge the U.S. government to play an active role in the reinvigoration of the Darfur peace process and to continue to prioritize the post-referendum peace process in South Sudan. Additionally, we will demonstrate widespread, grassroots support for a coordinated, interagency genocide prevention policy.
Since ratifying the Genocide Convention, the United States has played an increasingly important role in the prevention of genocide and mass atrocities. Today marks a culminating point in the movement to end and prevent genocide.
