Know Your Candidate

With the primaries in full swing, the 2012 elections are an opportunity for STAND students around the country to engage the candidates in conversations about mass atrocity prevention, civilian protection and the foreign aid budget. By joining in on this initiative, you will have the chance to not only to actively share your voice in the current political climate, but also to bring attention and awareness to genocide prevention. Using state primaries as an outlet for participation, you can hold local events, attend town hall meetings, hold localized social media initiatives, or even letter writing campaigns aimed at sustaining the foreign aid budget. There will also be opportunities for students to participate on a national and unified level by raising these same issues through twitter blitz and other social media tecniques at GOP debates.
We will provide you and your chapter with resources such as fliers and one-pagers with information you’ll need on the candidates’ foreign aid and conflict prevention stances. In addition to voter education resources, Regional Organizers and Advocacy Coordinator Maria Thomson can help you plan your level of engagement in your local primaries. We will also provide you with resources for online engagement. Much of the current election climate provides outlets online where students can raise their issues and concerns through social media. Our social media one-pagers will help you to come up with questions and strategies to garner attention from candidates whilst in your state.
Don’t let 2012 pass you by. Be Active and Be loud. Know your candidate.
