FAQ

What are we fundraising for?
All money raised will go to the Genocide Intervention Network, STAND's parent organization. It will be used to help GI-NET and STAND empower activists and form a permanent anti-genocide coalition by lobbying Congress, monitoring conflicts, funding conferences, and training movement leaders. With your help, we can make ending genocide a national priority! For specific information on how money is spent, please email Angela Deane at deane@genocideintervention.net.

Where should I send my donations?
Checks can be mailed to the Genocide Intervention Network, 1333 H St. NW, Washington, DC 20005. You can also donate online here.

What is the difference between this money and Civilian Protection?
This fundraiser is different from STANDFast in that contributions will NOT go towards the Civilian Protection Program, which works to directly reduce violence against civilians on the ground in Darfur and Burma. Instead, People Who MOVE the World will raise money that will be used for STAND and GI-NET staffing, conflict monitoring, national campaigns, conferences, key advocacy resources such as 1-800-GENOCIDE--in short, everything that is needed to strengthen the permanent anti-genocide constituency here in the United States.

If I'm out of my home state for the summer, how can I stay connected to other STAND chapters?
Participating in this campaign in a different community is a great opportunity to meet other great activists in the state where you are staying. Email the Regional Outreach Coordinator for the state in which you reside during the school year and he or she will put you in touch with chapters wherever you are!

What is the purpose of this Summer Fundraising Challenge other than to raise money?
Take this opportunity to meet other people involved with the cause. Get together with other STAND members in your city, and arrange a small fundraiser. You can have friends and family sponsor you for community service, hold a lemonade sale, or knock on people's doors, informing them of the cause. Take this as an opportunity to network, and get other people involved in our anti-genocide constituency!

Does this have to be a big event? Like running across the country?
Absolutely not. While big events are great, for a summer campaign it might be better for your chapter to focus on small, easy-to-plan fundraisers. For example, you can incorporate this campaign into you and your friends' normal summer activities. For example, you could throw a pool party and ask participants to donate a few dollars, get a local ice cream store to donate a portion of their sales on a particular day to GI-NET, or host a movie night at your house. Small, low-key events can have a huge impact! Be creative! For further event ideas, contact your Regional Outreach Coordinator.

How can I get a speaker?
Your Regional or State Outreach Coordinator may be able to give you some good suggestions for speakers. In addition, many towns have communities of refugees from Darfur, South Sudan, Congo, or Burma, or from past conflicts such as Rwanda or Cambodia. Contact your local chapter of the International Rescue Committee to see if there are any refugees in your area who might be good speakers. Finally, check out any colleges and universities in your area. Many schools have professors who teach courses in genocide studies or human rights law and who might have some free time during the summer to speak.
