Lobby While in DC!

NSC 2008

If you are arriving on Friday before the transition team rally, use your time to meet with your members of Congress!

Scheduling Your Meeting

Offices of members usually make every effort to meet with constituents who request a meeting. Explain to them that you are in town for a student Darfur activist conference, and you wanted to take the time to meet with them to inform them of your involvement.

First, find out who your members of Congress are by clicking here. Then, contact their office and ask to schedule a meeting any time before 2:30pm. The transition rally begins at 3:00. Let them know the approximate number of people that will be coming with you so they are not taken by surprise.

Preparing for Your Meeting

Make sure to research their record on Darfur by visiting DarfurScores.org. You might also want to check the status of their congressional and senatorial races, which you can do by clicking here. If they are running in a tight race, it’s possible that they will not be re-elected. Make sure you know the outcome of the race before your meeting.

The STAND advocacy team can help you prepare for your meeting. Click here to read our guide on how to have a successful lobby meeting. Click here to learn more about how Congress works.

We will hold a few lobby training calls closer to the conference if you have never received a lobby training, or would like a refresher. You will find out from your Regional Outreach Coordinator when this call will be.

Email advocacy@standnow.org if you have any other questions.
