    As the L in STAND’s SEAL campaign explains President Bush must reinforce Congress in using all economic and political tools available to encourage positive and meaningful Chinese engagement with the government in Khartoum. China, as a powerful and influential country has a significant and important relationship with Sudan. This year, China will host the 2008 Olympics, many viewing this event as their coming-out ceremony. However, China has not used their economic and social leverage to speak out about the genocide in Darfur to the UN Security Council or to the government of Sudan.

    On September 21st, 2004, President George W. Bush declared that “the world is witnessing terrible suffering and horrible crimes in the Darfur region of Sudan, crimes my government has concluded are genocide.” Yet, over three years after this declaration, genocide continues in Darfur. The President has not fulfilled this promise. In his last year in office, President Bush can, and must, make ending the atrocities in Sudan a much higher priority.

To this end, we call on the 2008 presidential candidates to make ending genocide in Darfur and around the world a priority in their campaign and in their presidency.
