SEAL: Take Action

<- Back to Campaign Overview

As we make Sudan an legacy issue for our Executive Branch, it is important that we put constant pressure on President Bush. Each week, STAND will have four main actions relating to the S.E.A.L. advocacy asks. We urge you and your chapter to participate in each action item, and promote them to your family, community members, and other students. Additionally, please check out the STAND Advocate Blog for constant updates on our advocacy asks. Please also check out our one pager that gives you suggestions on how to become part of the legacy.

Are you a chapter leader? Click Here to download our event planning guide. A new event idea will be posted each week.

We will also have a weekly featured action item. This is the most important action of the week, so make sure to get everybody you know to participate!

FEATURED ACTION
Join STAND chapters across the nation calling 1-800-GENOCIDE this week to ensure that the U.S. Government will Enforce UNAMIDSEAL by appropriating further funds for the force in Sudan! Make the call on your own, table at your school, and make sure that everybody calls their representative!

Did you organize a call-in day at your school? Are you planning other SEAL events? We want to hear about it! Let us know what you're up to so we can share your ideas with other chapters!

What to say

Urge your representative to support an additional $334 million for Darfur peacekeeping.

The United States welcomed UN Security Council Resolution 1769 and is calling for the robust deployment of the UNAMID force. However, this peacekeeping mission comes with a cost, and President Bush must Stick to his Promises and Enforce UNAMID by guaranteeing that the United States will meet its financial obligation to the mission. The future of UNAMID and thus the security situation in Darfur are dependent upon funding from member states.
Why it is important

The abysmal security situation in Darfur demands UN peacekeepers. Deploying and sustaining this peacekeeping force requires the financial commitment of all donor countries. The United States owes $334 million to fund UNAMID (the Darfur peacekeeping mission) in 2008. Without adequate funds, the UNAMID force will fail.
How to organize

Get creative to mobilize your school for the call-in day! You can set up phones outside the school cafeteria, ask the administration to sponsor a "call-in minute" when people can use their cell phones to call, or ask organizations and clubs at school to sponsor a call-in at their meetings or promote it to their members. You could also hold a contest to see what school organization can make the most calls (set up teams!). Good luck!

Policy Asks:

1. Stick to his Promises: Contact your Representative today and call on them to co-sponsor House Resolution 1011 which calls on the President to introduce multilateral sanctions against Sudan in the United Nations Security Council.

2. Enforce UNAMID: Tell your Representative to enforce UNAMID by supporting an additional 334 million for peacekeeping in Darfur.
3. Apply an All-Sudan Solution: Contact your Senator today and urge them to co-sponsor Senate Resolution 470 calling on President Bush to implement apply an All-Sudan Solution.
4. Lobby China: This year, 19 of the world's largest corporations will sponsor the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, and corporate sponsors of the Olympic games have the ability to make change. China has a number of oil investments in Sudan and has not used its leverage with Khartoum to help stop the genocide.
O Rallies will be held in 9 states including Washington, Georgia, New York, New Jersey and target 13 corporate sponsors of the Olympics. STAND chapters and other community and advocacy organizations will play an integral role in planning and hosting the rallies within the designated locations. If your STAND chapter or community organization is interested in learning more about rallies please sign up at http://www.standnow.org/campaigns/seal/takeAction/corporateRally or contact Adriane Alicea at AAlicea@standnow.org.
