Today, STAND announces the launch of our fall campaign,

Sound the Alarm!

“It’s time for our President and Congress to stop hitting ‘snooze’ on genocide prevention.”

Join STAND this fall as we remind our administration why we can no longer delay on genocide prevention. We once stood together to end the genocide in Darfur, making our voices heard and demanding action from the administration. We succeeded on numerous fronts - from 27 states, dozens of colleges and pension funds divesting from Sudan to the White House’s recent announcement of a Presidential Directive on Mass Atrocities. But our government’s responsive measures were still too late for hundreds of thousands of civilians in Darfur. Violence has persisted in Darfur and is continuing to escalate in South Kordofan and the Blue Nile State. How can we keep mass atrocities from happening again in Sudan?

We know how to end genocide and mass atrocities. Inspired by our movement, experts have done the research and outlined the tools, structures, and resources necessary to prevent violence worldwide. Now is the time for our administration and Congress to stop pressing snooze on Sudan and make these measures into a permanent reality. Our campaign this Fall seeks not only to call for an end to violence in Darfur, but to create a long-term groundwork for our administration to make genocide prevention a priority so that we may prevent it wherever it may occur, from South Kordofan, Sudan to Benghazi, Libya.

This campaign will call upon you, your chapters and community members to sign on as citizen co-sponsors of up-coming Sudan legislation.  As co-sponsors of this upcoming legislation, we will further build up a community willing and able to mobilize around rapid response opportunities and ongoing conflicts to advocate for the protection of civilians in Sudan. Together, our sponsorship of this legislation will also demonstrate to Congress the constituency behind this initiative and signal the action we hope they will take to match our own commitment once this legislation reaches the Senate floor for a vote. Starting with your commitment as a co-sponsor, we'll ask our movement leaders to take this campaign into their communities and ask others to co-sponsor such crucial legislation to call priority attention to the need to immediately protect civilians in Sudan and implement structural change for genocide prevention.

Sound the Alarm is a three-phase campaign.

Phase 1: Add Your Voice

The first phase of the STAND’s “Sound the Alarm!” campaign asks members of your chapter to become citizen co-sponsors of upcoming Sudan legislation. As citizen co-sponsors, we’re asking those who are already committed to our movement to demonstrate it to Congress, by taking the action we will ask them to take to partner with us and become official Senate co-sponsors of the bill. STAND will release a variety of resources associated with the citizen co-sponsorship initiative. Use these resources to organize in your communities and invite new members to our movement.

Phase 2: STAND out Loud

As citizen co-sponsors you garnered support in your own communities to help build a unified voice in the name of civilian protection and prevention of mass atrocities in Sudan. Now it’s time to show the power of that voice and invite others into the fold. To increase visibility and show the power of the genocide prevention constituency, hundreds of chapters across the country will invite concerned citizens to join as a co-sponsor through a day of national events in October.

Phase 3: Send a Wake-up call

You’ve given your voice, invited others to commit theirs, and demonstrated the power of that collective, so now it’s time to make that voice heard by the policy makers who can do something about it! The final phase of the campaign will involve direct advocacy through lobby meetings, call ins, op-eds and other creative approaches you and your chapter use to send a direct wake up call to Congress and the administration, starting with the conference in October.
