Action 4: Connect With Your Community
Wherever you may be this summer, continue your anti-genocide efforts by connecting with your friends, family, and community members. Collaborating with communities is fun and inspiring, and it will serve you and your chapter well when big campaigns like DarfurFast roll around in the fall. Community groups and individuals will help you increase your base of support for all your fundraising and programming throughout the school year. Help your community lend its voice to the survivors of the genocide!
Step 1: Build a Relationship:
Take the first steps in outreaching to potential anti-genocide community groups. Distribute the Community Partner’s Guide to local anti-genocide, Darfur, and religious groups in order to explain how they can work with STAND chapters and students.
Step 2: Build a Collaboration:
Take the next steps and create an effective collaboration by organizing around an event or campaign
Step 3: Build a Coalition:
Build an effective, sustainable coalition to fight genocide
More Ways to Empower Your Community Members
- Hold community movie screenings. Show a documentary on Sudan, Burma, or the Democratic Republic of Congo. See Action 1’s STAND Summer Movie List. Inform community members on how they can help stop and prevent genocide by inviting them to Join the Summer Fundraising Challenge.
- Host a gathering at your home, your congregation, community gathering spot or local restaurant. Show videos and pictures from the camps, and share the stories of the survivors of the genocide. Make follow up actions, such as the ones suggested in this Action Pack, available to them.
- Host an anti-genocide benefit or concert. Get local bands to play, and donate ticket sales to the Genocide Intervention Network’s Civilian Protection Program.
- Set up a STAND table at public events, like concerts or festivals. Don't forget to include educational, advocacy, and fundraising materials! Use a STAND brochure to inform others about your activism.
- Write an op-ed to your local paper about the conflicts in Sudan, Burma, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
- Plan an educational activity with summer camp or day care kids. Use STAND created materials such as the STAND powerpoint and script to help you educate others about the genocide in Sudan.
- Set up a table at the local library to distribute information and recommend reading to those interested in learning more about genocide.
- Invite your community members, friends, and family to become Rapid Responders!
