Action 7: Get Creative

Action 7: Get CreativeSTAND students consistently create some of the most effective and creative anti-genocide actions and events out there. Piece together STAND-provided advocacy, education, media, and fundraising materials and resources to organize your very own event.

Ten Event Planning Tips:

  1. The More, The Merrier: Coordinate with other chapter members, friends, family, and community groups.
  2. Spread the word: Advertise! Hang signs all over town, in local businesses, make announcements in community and religious bulletins, and advertise in the neighboring towns.  Tell your State or Regional Outreach Coordinator so that he/she can tell the others in your area.
  3. Be newsworthy: Send a press release, call the local news stations and invite reporters.  Make sure they know that high school students are working hard this summer to educate their communities and stop the genocide in Darfur. Check out our media resources!
  4. Hand out a flyer with information about your STAND chapter to let people in your community know how they can join your efforts. You can also make a sign-up sheet for people who would like to join your STAND chapter or receive email updates about what you’re doing.
  5. Use your event to connect with other potential activists. Let your guests know what they can do beyond giving money. Encourage people to commit to taking additional action!
  6. Make a presentation or offer handouts at all of your events.
  7. Explain where the donations are going. Also, include brief details about the situation and the need for donations in the invitation.
  8. Ask for checks or have a computer with internet access at the event for online donations; avoid sending cash.
  9. Read the fundraising success stories from other anti-genocide activists for ideas.
  10. Contact your Regional Outreach Coordinator and State Outreach Coordinator for more advice, guidance, and event advertisement.
