Action 2: Lobby China
As President Bush's term winds down this summer, STAND is ramping up its efforts on the Sudan: The Executive Legacy Campaign by focusing on section 4 of SEAL: “Lobby China”.
Following a series of demonstrations STAND members hosted this semester, you can turn up the heat on China by participating in the Olympic Corp Sponsor Campaign. Visit the campaign site for details on the concrete individual and group actions* you can take. This summer, through grassroots activism and national actions, you can help put pressure on corporate sponsors to urge China to act responsibly right up until 8/8/08.
China helps perpetuate the genocide in Darfur by protecting Sudan diplomatically and contributing to its oil economy. In turn, this economic support is often used to buy small arms shipments from China to use against the civilians in Darfur.
The world knows of the controversy surrounding China as host of the Olympics, and will be watching closely to see how China handles the political and economic pressure it is currently under before and throughout this celebrated event. This gives the corporate sponsors of the Games a special opportunity to urge China to use its influence in order to make significant policy change in Darfur.
