STAND up at Cooperstown Central School

In the summer of 2008, Laura Derouin and Anna Weber (seniors in the class of 2009) went the District 7170 Rotary Youth Leadership conference and learned about a local STAND chapter at the Unatego High School. Inspired, they decided to start STAND in their own high school at Cooperstown, but did not take action until roughly 90 students visited Washington, D.C. for the presidential inauguration and spent half a day at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. These students and the teachers that chaperoned returned to the school determined to educate their peers about genocide. As a high school, students and much of the staff watched "Schindler's List." From there, most eleventh and twelfth grade English classes began classwork concerning genocide awareness. This is the stage we are at right now. All of us have wanted to do something; it took the combination of our desires to get the wheels turning. Also join our "Genocide Awareness" group on Facebook, started by Robert Harmon. We are currently in the process of getting STAND approved by the Board of Education and beginning projects in the school and community.

The father of one of the core members of STAND is a writer, and he wrote this article for us to share with STAND and the media on the Holocaust Survivor event two weeks ago:

“Go Out and Save the World”

I'm sorry, that makes me giggle.

Also we don't need the school to run STAND. Awesomeness.

    UPDATE ON STAND

Okay. We have the letter written. Many of you have signed it. But Mr. Snyder recommended we edit the first page some more and add information about the Unatego STAND chapter. I can't call the Unatego school until Monday, so Monday I'll call, Monday night I'll rewrite, Monday 9th period I'm hoping to visit the freshmen honors English class to give that miniature presentation (any volunteers to join me? hopefully TC, because we were so ace), and Tuesday I'll get it to the Board, somehow. TC, is the best method through you to your mom?

Note: I told her everything we're doing/have done thus far and she's really impressed.

    Hi Anna!

I am so excited you are interested in starting a STAND chapter! etc. etc.

I first of all wanted to say thank you so much for your interest in starting a STAND chapter! As you may or may not know STAND is a student anti-genocide coalition with chapters at more than 800 schools around the world. Our organization is entirely student-led and is here to help you by providing the resources and support you need to take action to stop and prevent genocide.

Okay, so LD & I was going to talk to Kuke this week just to tell her that this will be happening in her happy little high school, tell her what it's about, and ask if we can meet and hold our events and things in the school and as a part of the school. After that's said and done, I'll put up a ton of posters around school alerting students of our presence in their midst. Then either late next week or mid-the-week-after-that (probably the latter), let's have our first organizational meeting. Sound like a plan?
