Defiance College Stand

We need you!

Defiance College Stand is composed of Defiance College Students, faculty, and community members dedicated to stopping genocide, particularly in Darfur.

Our recent activities:
In February 2010, STAND members collaborated with the Office of Spiritual Life and many area community members in a project that culminated in the sending of hundreds of hygiene kits and cash to Haiti.

During Fall 2009 we began to focus on the crisis in the Congo, to study the situation and to seek ways to raise awareness about that situation, while continuing to support efforts to end the genocide in Darfur.

When a village in South Sudan was attacked that fall, we quickly hosted a prayer service for these people, who were suddenly under attack in violation of a peace treaty.

We also expanded our mission by collaborating with the campus Office of Spiritual Life in presenting a prayer service on National AIDS Day.

In Spring 2009 we presented "One Night, One Voice" in advocacy for the women of Darfur. We also presented a program on the crisis in Darfur for the McMaster Symposium/ Collegiate Global Summit on our campus.

Beginnings:
The chapter was established in the 2007-2008 academic year.
In April, 2008 we presented an educational event on the DC campus and in June at a United Church of Christ Conference at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio.

That spring (2008), our chapter was officially recognized by the Defiance College Student Senate.

The following fall, we collected postcard signatures to send to the transition offices for the new administration and participated in STANDFast.

Stand members help pack hygiene kits for Haiti

Stand members again assisted the Office of Spiritual Life and other campus groups by helping with a prayer service to bless hygiene kits that are being transported to Haiti.

As with the AIDS prayer service last Fall, members folded many origami peace cranes for the service to represent hopes for peace and healing.

Prior to the service, Stand members helped assemble the hygiene kits.

Die In at the McCann Center

Students, faculty, and staff at Defiance College staged a "Die In" at two campus locations on Monday, February 23 in order to draw attention to the genocide in Darfur and the upcoming Defiance College STAND event, "One Night, One Voice." Signs on and around the participants called attention to the numbers of Darfuris who have been killed or displaced, the violence against women, and the fact that the genocide has continued since 2003.
