STAND @ the University of Oklahoma

STAND has been at the University of Oklahoma since the Spring of 2010. Previous members from the student organization, Students for Action in Darfur, feel it is important for students on campus to be aware of the genocides occurring in all areas around the world. By creating a chapter of STAND at the University of Oklahoma we aspire to make international news commonplace on our campus and encourage the student body to actively advocate for human rights. We believe that all human beings are equally important regardless of their origin, that human rights are universal and should be protected, and that genocide-no matter where it may occur has no place in this century. The purpose of STAND at the University of Oklahoma is to: a) raise public awareness on our campus of the genocides occurring today b) advocate human rights c) show others what they can do to help We hope to accomplish these goals by bringing public speakers and important figures in international human rights to our campus, by throwing fundraising events for humanitarian aid groups working in crisis areas around the world, and by advocating the power of every U.S. citizen to voice their opinions to their representatives on issues concerning genocide. For the Spring 2010 semester: OU STAND meets regularly at Gittinger Hall 317 every Thursday @ 7pm.

On February 23rd 2010, Tom Van Dyke was flown into Oklahoma from Greensboro to speak to the campus about the genocide in Burma. Tom Van Dyke is the Executive Director of Heroes Serving Humanity. Heroes Serving Humanity(HSH) provides training to indigenous volunteers in first aid, basic medical care, landmine removal and other skills needed to prepare relief team workers.
