STAND JuneauCREATED:12.11.2008
AlaskaWestUnited States
We're STAND Juneau in Juneau, AK and we've been here for going on three years now. SJ was founded by me (Lauren Tibbitts-Travis) in '06-07 school year and have had many successful events, including
* rally for the passage of state fund divestment legislation
* movie showing for state fund divestment legislation
* 'teach-in' at local middle and high schools
* STANDFast and DarfurFast events
* etc.
Our group consists of now three core members, including myself; we also have random people showing up at our meetings and have welcomed members of our student council, teachers, and our National Honor Society and Interact clubs.
Currently my chapter has raised approximately $2000 at various STAND/Darfur-Fast events, a number that I am incredibly proud of. I have the lucky position as an intern for a local Representative in the AK Legislature, so I am blessed with people who automatically are able to attend our events and help us get the word out around town. At our showing of "The Devil Came on Horseback" in '08, we were in a theatre that housed about 80 people jam packed--we ended up having two full houses in one night. It was amazing! It showed me how people (if enticed with a free movie--hahah, just joking!) can come together in a single focus and get out and communicate as a community. Even though we only had about 160 people come out to our movie, it was a great thing to see them all come together. There were strangers, business men and women, civil servants, all sorts of people that, after the show, held discussions and asked questions. That week was the most amazing thing that I have ever seen, the paper flooded with op-eds and letters to the editor about genocide and our event.
STAND Juneau is proud to welcome new members! Currently SJ is only at Juneau's Juneau Douglas High School, and we're hoping to have a chapter running at our new Thunder Mountain High School. I welcome all questions, comments and inquiries! Feel free to email me at stand.lauren@gmail.com, red_rose99801@hotmail.com, Facebook, Myspace, all that jazz. Hope that your chapters all do well this coming year!
Sincerely,
Lauren

ANYwhoo. STAND Juneau held a rather okay event, a 'lets-get-back-into-the-swing-of-things' event, if I do say so myself. STANDFast is a fund-raising/educating campaign with STAND, a student anti-genocide coalition and the Genocide Intervention Network that raise money for GI-Net's Civilian Protection Program that directly help the people on the ground in the genocide areas.
