What is the Human Rights Torch Relay? The Human Rights Torch Relay (HRTR) is an international year-long event traveling to major cities around the world. Who Are We? The HRTR is a global project made up of nonprofit organizations, civic and professional groups, churches and individuals who are committed to universal human rights. The Coalition to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong (CIPFG) initiated the Human Rights Torch Relay in Athens, Greece in August 2007. Why Are We Doing This? We want to bring attention to human rights abuses in China which have increased since China was chosen as the 2008 Olympic host. We believe that the Olympic Games and crimes against humanity cannot coexist in China. We are alarmed about the widespread and severe persecution of Christians, Uyghur Muslims, Tibetan Buddhists, Falun Gong, democracy advocates, AIDS victims, journalists, and lawyers. In addition to these persecutions, the Chinese Communist Party supports other totalitarian regimes in their assaults on their citizens - in Burma, Darfur and North Korea. We are calling upon China to stop all state-sanctioned murder, torture, unlawful arrests and detention, and all violations of the International Human Rights Law and to release all prisoners of conscience. Bands: Great Job, Monterey, the Jons Speakers: TBD The focus of this event, which will take place from 1 PM to 4 PM on Sunday, April 13, 2008, is to urge our elected officials to support the new UN Peacekeeping force in Darfur. The UN officially took over from the African Union in January 2008, but at the moment is facing several major obstacles that are preventing them from fulfilling their mandate to protect civilians. In particular, they are in desparate need of helicopters and ground vehicles, which could easily be provided by Western governments. They also face crippling restrictions imposed by the government of Sudan, which means that the US government must continue to apply economic and political pressure. Participants will assemble at El Presidio Park, and hear briefly from one or two speakers who will explain the situation in Darfur and why it is something that we should speak up about on a local level. At that point, the march will begin, with participants following a circuitous route down several major city streets in order to maximize visibility and impact. The march is intended to "make some noise" to show that the Tucson community supports continued international involvement in Darfur. Overall, the march itself will last between 30 and 45 minutes, ending at El Presidio (to avoid difficulties with transporting people back to their cars once the event is over). All logistical details of the march portion of the event will be coordinated with the Tucson Police Department and the Tucson Department of Transportation. Once the march is over, the remainder of the event will consist of two major activities: hearing from speakers who can give insight into the situation in Darfur, and enjoying music from three local bands: Great Job, the Jons, and Monterey. In addition, funds will be raised through the sale of raffle tickets and promotional T-shirts, to be donated to the United Nations World Food Program for direct aid to the people of Darfur.

The local group Dayton for Darfur will hold a benefit concert Thursday, March 6, at the Pearl Nightclub on Patterson in downtown Dayton. Musical performers will include indie rock band Records Records Records from Broad Ripple, Indiana, and local solo artist Mascot. Local spoken word artist Dave Nichols will also perform, and members of Dayton for Darfur will speak about the purpose of the benefit and show several minutes of footage relating events in Darfur. Relevant literature, merchandise, and letters and petitions will also be available. Doors will open at 9 p.m. Admission is $5, though additional donations are encouraged. The purpose of the benefit concert is to raise funds to contribute to speaker and venue costs for a rally and march planned for April 19 and to generate interest in Dayton for Darfur’s activities. Since December 2007, Dayton for Darfur has been planning a rally and march to take place in downtown Dayton on April 19. The rally will begin at Courthouse Square. A march will then lead the rally from Courthouse Square to the Dayton Convention Center. The purpose of the rally is to educate the public about the tragedy in Darfur, to increase lobbying efforts, and to raise funds to contribute to the Save Darfur Coalition and Doctors Without Borders. The April 19 event will feature select speakers, including a refugee from Darfur and interested policy-makers. Cosponsors of the event include: Amnesty International, The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), The Dayton Circus, The Dayton International Peace Museum, Genocide Intervention Network, Ginghamsburg Church, The Jewish Community Relations Council, the Save Darfur Coalition, Save the Children, STAND (University of Dayton chapter), and Wright State University Physicians for Human Rights.
