Stopping Genocide in Darfur: What You Can Do
A Conversation with John Prendergast


John Prendergast, Author and Human Rights Activist

Having worked on crises in Africa for over twenty years, Mr. Prendergast is a dedicated humanitarian.  During the Clinton administration he was the director of African Affairs for the National Security Council (1996-1999) and was a Special Advisor to the State Department (1999-2001). Currently he serves as a Senior Advisor of the International Crisis Group. With focused efforts in Sudan , the Congo , Chad , and Uganda , Mr. Prendergast is the Co-Chair of the Enough Project, which was founded in 2006 to work with individuals and policy-makers to promote peace and help end genocide and crimes against humanity.  Mr. Prendergast co-authored his most recent publication with actor Don Cheadle, Not on Our Watch: The Mission to End Genocide in Darfur and Beyond (2007).

Voices from Darfur

STAND for Conscience and the Save Darfur Coalition have coordinated this Voices from Darfur event at Annandale High School. Speakers include Abu Asal and Elnour Adam. Abu Asal is from the city of Al-Fashir and has written various articles and books that have spoken out against the Sudanese government's treatment of the Darfuri people. Elnour Adam's village was one of the first to be attacked, he has various family at refugee camps in Chad and voices opinion against the genocide through various methods of peaceful activism. With a stance against the genocide in Darfur, both have brought their voices to the national speaking tour.

The Troubled Heart of Africa: A Journey into the Congo

Weber State STAND will be hosting a Congo Awareness day featuring a refugee speaker and a film about the devastating war in the Congo. This is a great oppurtunity to learn first hand about the war in the Congo that has claimed over 5.4 million lives and has resulted in the rapes of hundreds of thousands of women. Welcoming Grace-The story of a former child soldier

Grace Akollo from the Zion Project, an organization dedicated to help the people of Uganda, will be speaking at 7pm Wednesday the 16th of April in the Wildcat theater of the union building at Weber State University in ogden, Utah. Grace will speak about her experience as a former child soldier in the Lord's Resistance Army in Northern Uganda. Grace is a very influential speaker and it is an honor for Weber State to host her speech. This is an oppurtunity that you can't miss!

Darfuri Refugee Speaker-Voices of Darfur

Event: 12:00a.m.-1:15 p.m. Jackson, Tenn. - Jackson State Community College will present Ibrahim Adam, a refugee from Darfur, as a guest speaker at Noon on Wednesday, April 9 in Ayers Auditorium in the McWherter Center. Adam is a part of "Voices of Darfur," a national speaking tour, presented by the student anti-genocide coalition, STAND. The event is being sponsored on campus by JSCC student club Nation Against Genocide and the Student Government Association. "Voice of Darfur" features a short documentary film followed by a personal account of the genocide from survivors like Adam. As many as 400,000 people have been killed and 2.5 million displaced. In efforts to raise money and awareness for genocide in Darfur, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron will be hosting “The Concert for Darfur” Saturday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. The concert, open to the public, will feature the following local bands and music artists: Pete Nischt, Déjà vu and Slight Revolution. Dan Teng’o, a graduate student in journalism and mass communication at Kent State University, will also be speaking about his own experiences as a journalist in Darfur. Admission is $5, and all proceeds from admission, baked goods and t-shirts will benefit Darfur.
