3) Call the White House through 1-800-GENOCIDE using our talking points.

President Obama and his administration should:

1) Ensure the United States protects civilians in Sudan by imposing consequences on those responsible for violence in Abyei, South Kordofan, the South, and Darfur, and also supports a strong and capable UN Mission in South Sudan with a robust civilian protection mandate and ability to patrol in the border regions.

2) Help secure the peace between North and South Sudan, through the United States and international community’s work to resolve all outstanding post-referendum issues, especially Abyei, and implement all provisions of the CPA.

3) Work closely with the international community to support peace in Darfur and push for the rebels and the Sudanese government to engage seriously at Doha in order to create a comprehensive peace agreement for Darfur, and also work to protect Darfuri civilians through the strengthening of the UNAMID mission.

ALERT: Congress to De-Fund Foreign Aid

UPDATE:

Now, Congress is planning to further cut the foreign aid budget, already less than 1% of our national budget, and slashing funding for disaster assistance, migration and refugee assistance, a complex crises fund and others that keep people alive.

STAND has partnered up with with the ONE Campaign and ten other leading organizations in a nation-wide effort to get our message through to Congress: these cuts will cost lives.

Call 1-800-GENOCIDE right now and tell your Senator that you oppose further cuts to vital programs in the foreign aid budget.

Congress is making tough decisions when it comes to budget cuts, but we cannot let those cuts eliminate the key programs that continue to aid the world's most vulnerable.

Introduce yourself to the staff member who answers, and tell him/her you are a constituent and a supporter of STAND.
Tell the staff member that you recognize that Congress is making tough budget decisions right now.
Then let the staffer know that you'd like to urge your Congressperson to oppose efforts to cut funding for key programs that will aid the world’s most vulnerable in the 2011 foreign aid budget.

Last Friday, the House Appropriations Committee introduced a bill that would significantly cut funding for emergency food aid, refugee assistance, and broader genocide prevention efforts by nearly 50% across the board. With foreign aid already less than 1% of the national budget, further cuts would have devastating consequences worldwide.

We need to let our Representatives know we will not STAND by while they cut life-saving assistance to the world's most at-risk populations. Call 1-800-GENOCIDE (436-6243) now and ask your representative to oppose the drastic cuts to the foreign aid budget currently being considered by the House.

It is now 50 days into his presidency, and Obama has not yet invested enough time and energy into addressing the genocide in Darfur. And the situation is getting increasingly dangerous. Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir's decision to revoke the licenses of major aid groups in Darfur leaves millions of lives hanging in the balance. More than ever, we need to show the President exactly what he still needs to do to properly address the crisis in Darfur.

Early this morning, we posted on the STAND Blog that the Government of Sudan has seized Muhajiriya, South Darfur.

Khartoum is clearly testing the Obama administration's resolve. Call the State Department today and demand immediate action. If you called on Wednesday about Muhajiriya, call again and urge Senator Clinton and Ambassador Rice to act now to address the escalating violence threatening Darfuri civilians.

Contact your Outreach Coordinator today to sign up to host an event for the Presidential Inaugural Committee's National Day of Service!

On January 19, organizations all across the country will be hosting events for the National Day of Service. STAND has been asked by the Presidential Inaugural Commitee to participate on this historic day, and we need your help!

This is a great opportunity for STAND chapters to get national publicity and to start influencing the Obama administration to make Darfur a priority from Day One. In fact, every event we put together will be featured on the Presidential Inagurual Commitee website.

What can your chapter do?

Step 1: Contact your Outreach Coordinator to sign your chapter up for the event. The Outreach Coordinator will work with you on the details of the event. For your January 19th event to be officially recognized as a part of STAND's National Day of Service event, you MUST confirm with your Outreach Coordinator.

Step 2: Start planning. Book space and start getting the word out. You can be creative with the event, but, again, you must talk to your Outreach Coordinator for details.

Step 3: Host the event on January 19th. You'll be STANDing in solidarity with at least 20 other chapters across the country, and your efforts could be featured on the National Day of Service.

Let's make sure Senator Clinton's successor is just as committed to ending genocide as Senator Clinton is. Call Governor Paterson and express your admiration of Clinton's record on Darfur. Tell Governor Paterson that he needs to appoint someone of equal dedication to the New York Senate seat.
