Wed, 22 Oct 2008 21:00:00 EDT National Education Call - Burma Burma is one of the statistically poorest and most overlooked states on Earth. Many students only know that something bad is happening in Burma, but they have no comprehension of the causal relationships of any of the historical events in Burma that are the precursors to the current civil unrest. This education call focused on the colonial history, the 1962 revolt, and the economic status of Burma as a developing country. Special attention was given to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her role in shaping the political stand off; along with the current military campaign against the Karen people of East Burma, of which is of special interest to STAND activists. Wed, 10 Sep 2008 21:00:00 EDT National Conference Call - Sept. 9, 2008 Tue, 09 Sep 2008 21:00:00 EDT National Education Call - Sri Lanka The education call on Sri Lanka featured Bruce Fein, a constitutional scholar, former associate deputy attorney general under President Reagan, Chairman of the American Freedom Agenda, and representative for Tamils Against Genocide, and Arvind Suguness, Communications Director for People for Equality and Relief in Lanka, an active member of the Tamil diaspora, and a student at Ohio State University currently applying to medical schools. The call covered: A brief history of Sri Lanka and the roots of its conflict; Charges of genocide of Tamils; Human right violations such as disappearances, colonization, bombing of humanitarian zones, etc. Wed, 27 Aug 2008 21:00:00 EDT National Education Call - Somalia The Somalia education call featured former Ambassador to Rwanda (79-81) and Somalia (87-90), Frank Crigler, and Bashir K. Sudi, a former Assistant Lecturer at Somali National University, active member of the Somali Diaspora Network, and currently an IT consultant in the US. Topics discussed in the call include: The way Somali history is manifesting itself in the current conflict; Washington Policy to Somalia; the role of the international community; the role of clan conflict; and, the presence of Ethiopian soldiers on Somali soil. Towards the end of the call, the former Ambassador was asked what we as college and high school students could do about the tragedy that is going on right now in Somalia, his answer was "Exactly what you're doing right now, educating yourselves." Thu, 14 Aug 2008 21:00:00 EDT National Education Call - Burma Thu, 24 Jul 2008 21:00:00 EDT National Education Call - Khartoum Attacks In the wake of the May 10 JEM attacks on Khartoum, the capitol of Sudan, ethnic Darfuris living in the capitol have been rounded up and arbitrarily detained, and just this past week 36 were being put on trial. In the kind of quick mobilization that STAND prides itself on, 44 students got on a rapid response call about the current situation in Khartoum. A leader within the Darfuri diaspora and US activist community, Mohammed Suleiman, explained what was happening on the ground, while STAND's National Outreach Coordinator, Charlotte Hill, energized and mobilized the informed students to action. The level of violence got to the point where the MDC candidate, Morgan Tsvangirai, withdrew from the race, declaring it to be an unfair election process.
