Since UN forces arrived earlier this year, they've been facing difficulties in Darfur. Shortages of supplies and government foot-dragging have been major obstacles. But the situation took a turn for the worse this week when a peacekeeping mission in Northern Darfur was ambushed by 40 armored vehicles. Seven peacekeepers were killed in the fighting, and 22 more wounded.
The Sudanese Government blames the Sudan Liberation Army, but both the SLA and the JEM deny involvement in the attack. UN forces suspect the Janjaweed to be responsible. This attack represents a new turn in the violence in Darfur, and it's unclear as of yet who's responsible or what the results will be.
