DIE-IN FOR DARFUR

Die-In at Queens College

As Queens College's Chaney-Schwerner-Goodman clock tower tolled noon on Monday, March 23rd, a dozen STAND students laid down on the front steps of one of campus's most popular buildings to express solemn solidarity with those being victimized by genocide in Sudan. Equipped with black signs with white lettering - with sayings such as "Genocide by Rape," "Peace in Sudan," "What if these were your children?" and "If you can't lay down against genocide, what can you stand up for?" - in the shape of tombstones, STAND students aimed to raise awareness about the urgency of the humanitarian situation in Sudan (what with 16 humanitarian organizations having been banned recently, putting millions at immediate risk). STANDers also wished to expand their base at Queens College, and the die-in certainly served to strengthen the movement at QC. Another die-in followed a couple of weeks later, on April 1st, this time with students (and performers from AquaMoon and a Queens College professor!) forming a peace sign with their bodies. Much bigger future actions at Queens College are being planned to promote the nonviolent end to the genocide in Sudan (more to come on this website: stay tuned)!
