Holocaust Survivor Helen Sperling Comes to Speak

In World War II during the Nazi occupation of Poland, Helen Sperling was forced to endure life in the concentration camps at Ravensbruck and Buchenwald. She is a Holocaust Survivor.
She will tell her story on October 29th at the United Methodist Church in Fly Creek, as part of a program sponsored by the Cooperstown High School genocide awareness group, STAND (Students Taking Action Now Darfur).
Six million Jews died in the Holocaust. Sperling lost her entire family except her brother, with whom she was reunited with after the war. Following her marriage to another Holocaust survivor, Leon Sperling, she emigrated to America and adopted two children. When her children experienced anti-Semitic taunts at school, Sperling was motivated to speak.
“Hello, I am Helen Sperling, a Jew and a Holocaust survivor.” Sperling has uttered these opening remarks for the past 45 years as she has shared her personal journey during the Holocaust with large crowds at universities, public schools, churches and civic groups across the Northeastern United States.
The program will take place from 6:30 P.M. until 9 P.M. The event will begin with images of the Holocaust, compiled by local high school seniors and accompanied by the music of Henryck Gorecki. Mrs. Sperling’s presentation and a discussion will follow. After the presentation, a reception will follow with homemade refreshments and a question and answer session with STAND members.
Ticket prices will be ten dollars for adults and five dollars for children and students. All proceeds will be donated to organizations assisting the victims of mass genocide. Tickets will be sold locally at Augur’s Book Store on Main Street in Cooperstown as well as Fly Creek General Store on Route 28 in Fly Creek. Ticket sales will be limited to the first two hundred purchasers. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact STAND representative Jessie Shelton at (607) 282-4010.
