Home again, Home again
After an amazing couple of days in Washington DC with our sister group, DYRHS, Harwich is more enthused than ever to rekindle the fire seen in the eyes of those 700 activists this weekend. We are fully committed to bringing that fire to everyone we talk to about STANDfast, and will work until we raise [to be decided Wednesday] dollars here.
We plan to do this by:
-Getting people to sponsor us individually
-Getting people to join the effort and give something up
-Taking donations all week at lunch
-Offering History Class extra credit for those that participate
-Holding the 'Last Supper' [location to be announced] for MA STAND groups-- There will be speakers and suggested donations.
DAY 1 of DC
-Arrive, freshen up, get mucho caffeine
-Smithsonian Castle
-Washington Monument
-Holocaust Museum [not nearly enough time!!]
-Senator Kennedy's office -- Talked to Henry Sanford about foreign policy
-Capitol Tour
-Chasing the Rally OR back 'home' to shower
-Night Monument tour: Iwo Jima, Lincoln Memorial w/ Mohawk, Giuliani's fire chief's wife, Obama's huge card
-SLEEP after a very long, exciting day!
DAY 2 of DC
-Wake up early + head to conference for breakfast
-After lunch, some stayed to go into breakout groups, some headed to mall for Tents of Hope
-Meet up at the mall: Sing The Preamble and If I Had a Hammer on stage!! Met Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion, who borrowed Johnny Dickson's guitar!
-Some went to museum of American Indian. Others went back to conference for optional workshops
-Headed to Tents of Hope Youth Dinner -- delicious!
-Some stayed for the concert [best decision I've ever made], others headed to Union Station [no blue hair dye :( ]
-Gave Berklee College singers a ride home!
-SLEEP after another full day
FINAL DAY of DC
-After setting up some of the blown down Tents at the mall, we headed to the conference for the Regional Break out groups [not nearly enough time!!]
-Headed back after the optional workshops to the Tents of Hope at the Mall for the final concert.
-Head back onto the bus for what ended up being an 11-hour bus ride, with 2 hours of NYC traffic, which we sang our way through.
What an amazing and rewarding experience--we came back with full minds, and full hearts, which we will share on Wednesday and begin to finalize plans for STANDfast.
