Symposium Presentation

April 4, 2009--Defiance College Stand participated in the McMaster Symposium: Global Summit held on the college campus. Stand members Miles Byrne, Allison Henderson, Angela Santo, and Zac Polzin gave a presentation exploring the issue of sustainability of life, society, and ethnic culture in a community that has been displaced from its homeland. They explained to an overflow audience that more than 2.5 million Darfuris have been displaced during the ongoing genocide in Sudan and that for the many who continue to live in refugee camps, the main issues are basic food, water, shelter, and safety.

The presenters emphasized that continuing violence against women and girls is a key threat to the very fabric of these societies and to their continuing existence. To illustrate this critical issue, the presentation included a viewing of the SaveDarfur produced film, _Violence Against Women and the Darfur Genocdide_.
