Talent Show successful!
We raised about $350. this Friday for our Sister School, the New Sudan School, in Djebal Camp, Chad, for refugees of the Darfur Genocide. We had some amazing acts, and we also had two students, Amira Downes, and Zach Jamous, translating into Arabic for our Darfuri friends. We plan to send them clips of the show with the translations, so they can see how much our community supports them. We had each person who attended sign a card to send to them, as well.
We're one of the first groups to be paired with a Sister School, and are really kicking off the project. So far, very successful! We're awaiting an email or phone call from Sarah Lee Guthrie (daughter of Arlo Guthrie, granddaughter of Woody Guthrie) and Johnny Irion, her husband, who we met on our trip to DC for the STAND national conference in November. We're planning on doing a huge fundraiser featuring them on August 2nd in Chatham. Still in the planning stages!
MacKenzie Hamilton, Harwich High's STAND co-president, will be traveling to Rwanda with Global Youth Connect on June 26 to do humanitarian and post-genocide work in the country. She'll return on July 20th after having spoken to Rwandan government officials, taught in a classroom, and learned a whole lot more about conflict resolution.
More info as it comes in!
